Cutting systems

Cutting by muley sawand band saw
Both muley and band saws are suitable for cutting titanium.
Band saws are preferable because they enable a constant cutting speed to be maintained.

When cutting by saw, certain precautions must be taken in the same way as for other tasks:
  • Use low cutting speed and gentle pressure on the blade.
  • Use high-speed steel blades with 3-4 blade teethes per inch.
  • Blades must cut at slower speed and pressure of the first cuts with a new blade (Half of normal). This will result in precise cut and lengthen the working life of the blades.
  • Use plenty of lubrication. The use of sulphurized or chlorinated cutting oil lengthens the working life of the blades.
  • Do not remove the pressure on the blade while the blade is running and in contact with the metal. This will cause self-hardening and damage the blades.
  • Alloyed titanium, e.g. gr. 5, needs 2-2,5 times cutting time compared with grade 2.
  • The saw needs to be cleaned often to remove off cut.
